Antioxidants

Oxidation is a normal process within our bodies that contributes significantly to aging[1]. Oxidation causes the production of free radicals which damage other cells in the body and lead to aging[2]. Since this link was made between degenerative diseases and free radicals, scientists have focused on antioxidants.

Antioxidants work against free radicals by neutralizing them, preventing the damage they cause and even repairing the damage they do. Antioxidants are essential to our bodies.

During the naturally occurring process of oxidation, some free radicals are created. These free radicals cause aging. Oxidation is a natural bodily process which normally occurs every time we breathe. It is our body's way of metabolizing nutrients, breaking them down to provide energy which we need in order to perform our daily activities. Although oxidation is critical for our bodies, it has some negative effects on our bodies.

Antioxidants occur naturally in many foods[3]. Fresh produce is the best source of natural antioxidants. Fruits like apples and blueberries are great antioxidants. Vegetables, such as red beans and artichokes also have very good antioxidant qualities. Nuts and spices also are good antioxidants. Ground cloves, cinnamon and oregano have all been identified as helpful antioxidants.

According to antioxidant researchers, antioxidants play a significant role in preventing the start of certain diseases. Antioxidants in fact assist in the hindrance and possibly even treatment of life-threatening diseases like cancer simply by neutralizing free radicals. Antioxidants can actually delay aging and other illnesses caused by harmful free radicals.

Be sure to eat plenty of foods rich in antioxidants. These fruits and vegetables are nutritious and taste good, too. They protect, repair and even heal the harmful effects of oxidation. Antioxidants are essential to a good nutrition plan and to healthy living. Fight old age by eating plenty of foods rich in antioxidants.
