Compare Hoodia

Hoodia Gordonii has been used for generations by South African. It is called by other names including "Bushman's Hat" and "Queen of the Namib". The indigenous Bushmen call this plant Xhoba[1]. It is found in Africa and no where else. The tribesmen eat the Aerial Stem of the plant and discard any pulpy leaf, flora parts or roots.

In 1996 South African scientists discovered its appetite suppression effects which led to a yet undiscovered molecule called P57. This molecule was found to fool the body into thinking it has a full stomach by the effect that glucose has on the nerves in the brain.

Reports have curculitate that up to 80% of products claiming to contain Hoodia do not claim any at all[2]. One independent testing company report that over 60% of the products tested did not contain any.

Some of the tricks manufactures play:

  1. Substitution. High quality test samples are sent to the bottlers who may have it independently tested and once the order is placed it will be substituted with a material containing little or no Hoodia.

  2. Fillers in the form of saw dust are added to make it appear as if you are getting all you paid for.

  3. The root, or other parts of the hoodia plant, which contains little or no P57 are added to the mix.

One simple word: testing. Three of the most popular tests to determine if you are dealing with a genuine Hoodia product are;

  1. Microscopy test. This test consists of taking a look of the material under the microscope and comparing it to known samples. While not testing for the presence of the active ingredient it does offer a simple, low cost approach for determining the authenticity of a product and if results prove inconclusive it would provide evidence that more expensive testing is required.

  2. Thin-Layer Chromatography test. Also called the TLC testing method, this is a more accurate method that detects the actual ingredients being tested. Everything has a unique resonate frequency that can be used to identify it. Hoodia is no exception. This test causes the chemicals in the material to resonate and is detected by "TLC" sensors which plots its "finger prints."

  3. High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Similar to the TLC test, this test provides for a more accurate analysis of the material being tested and is thus much more expensive[3].
