Coenzyme Q10 is actually found everywhere in the body. Thus its chemical name, ubiquinone, from the same root as the word ubiquitous, "to be everywhere." Coenzyme Q10 allows cells to produce enough energy to do everything they need to do in order to keep a person alive. People with heart disease show a deficiency in Q10, and that is why supplements have been associated with maintaining heart health. Interestingly, coenzyme Q10 has been used to treat congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy, and has been used as a preventative measure for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, some types of which have heart-damaging affects. An amazing health study done on heart patients waiting for transplants showed such great improvement to heart health with the addition of coenzyme Q10, that some patients no longer needed transplants!

Patients with Parkinson's disease, a neurological degeneration that causes tremors and slow movements, also show a deficiency in Q10.

While there have been no recorded side effects in people taking large doses of Q10, doctors worry more about other ingredients in Q10 tablets that may be harmful in large doses-like glycol, a chemical addition that is meant to improve absorption.

Should you take coenzyme Q10? Because Q10 levels in the body deplete with age, older people may benefit more from taking Q10 as a supplement. For preventative purposes, people interested in anti-aging supplements can use Q10 to put a stop to this depletion before it starts. Q10 is powerful in other ways-it is a potent antioxidant (and as we all know, those slow the aging process). Not only that, but Q10 is often suggested for people with low levels of energy. It boosts the immune system, too. For people taking large amounts of daily medication, Q10 prevents toxicity from certain drugs meant for treating hypertension, cancer, and other diseases.

The difference between Q10 and other nutrients is that Q10 can be synthesized directly in the body. This means that it doesn't have to be gotten through the body like vitamins do. However, when Q10 deficiency is present, taking it as a supplement form is a good idea. While it is found in all foods, there isn't one specific food that delivers a steady supply of Q10, so pill form is currently the most practical way of making sure that you get plenty of Q10.
