Biotin is also known as vitamin H and also as vitamin B7. It is important in the acceleration of metabolic reactions which are essential to the human body to synthesize fatty acids in generating glucose from other organic molecules such as lactic acid, also known as milk acid, glycerin and amino acid. Biotin also plays an important part in metabolizing leucine, which is a white crystalline amino acid which is essential to the human body.

Biotin is a comparatively recent discovery made when astute medical professionals noted the deficiency symptoms being manifested in certain human beings and were able to correlate those deficiency symptoms with the fact that these particular human beings consumed a diet which consisted of thirty percent or more of raw eggs.

It was discovered that avidin, which is a protein and carbohydrate molecule which exists in the white of raw eggs, was binding the biotin and preventing it from being absorbed at its usual rate. When the eggs are cooked, avidin is destroyed and so this problem is no longer existent in the egg. When the avidin is eliminated, biotin is considered by most doctors and other health care professionals to be amongst the most stable of the B vitamins.

Biotin is an important factor in cell growth. It contributes to the production of fatty acids and the metabolism of fats and amino acids. Biotin also plays an important part in the process by which energy is released from foods. Biotin also helps in the transfer of carbon dioxide in the body. Biotin is also noted for assisting the body in maintaining a steady blood sugar level. Many scientists and health care professionals feel that biotin has a positive impact on keeping hair and nails in healthy conditions. Because of this, we will find that biotin is often used in many health care products and cosmetic products for the healthy care of or cosmetic enhancement of hair and skin.

Biotin can be found in such foods and food products as liver, kidneys, dairy products, oysters, lobsters, salmon, yeast, cauliflower, chicken breast, egg yoke, but not the white part of the egg, unpolished rice and nuts.

Many doctors and other health care professionals recommend biotin in the treatment of certain hair problems which are manifested in children as well as in adults and various skin disorders, which are often found in children as well as in adults. Many doctors and other health care professionals also feel that biotin has a positive effect in the treatment of certain kinds of sugar diabetes. Some doctors and other health care professionals have been known to recommend biotin in the treatment of certain kinds of muscle disorders to alleviate the muscle pains which accompany these disorders.
