While we don't often think of the fact that the human body actually is made up partially of metals and indeed, that very thought may tend to conjure up mental pictures of some sort of bionic person, it is very true that our human bodies do in fact contain metals and calcium is the most common one found. Calcium belongs to the chemical series which is commonly referred to as alkaline earth metals and is the fifth most abundant metal to be found in the crust of the earth. Calcium is essential for living organisms, especially when it comes to cell physiology.

History shows that the existence of calcium has been known since the first century when the ancient Romans used it in the creation of mortar and plaster to be used in decreasing the amount of time it took in hardening the substances that went into the creation of their buildings.

Sir Humphry Davy, an esteemed Cornish chemist and physicist who was born in Penzance, Cornwall , United Kingdom during the later part of the eighteenth century, was the person who in 1808 succeeded in isolating calcium by electrolyzing a mixture of lime and murcurite oxide.

Calcium is a major part of a healthy diet for human beings. It plays a strong part in the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth. Calcium is also needed for muscle contraction, proper clotting of blood, nerve impulse transmission, the regulation of the heart beat, and the proper balancing of fluids within cells.

Foods and food products that contain calcium are milk, cheese, butter, kelp, wakame, hijiki, almonds, sesame seeds, certain kinds of beans, oysters, shrimp, soft boned fish, amaranth, whole wheat, collard greens, okra, rutabaga, broccoli, orange juice bread, English muffins, bran muffins, fortified instant oatmeal, pancakes, cornmeal bran, fruit bran, plain bran, tofu, ice cream, yogurt and ice milk

Some doctors and professional health care workers feel that studies show that calcium helps in combating or preventing some forms of cancer. Calcium is also used by some doctors and other professional health care workers to prevent or eliminate some bone disorders, especially amongst older people Some studies have seemed to indicate that an increase of calcium in the body during pregnancy will help the body to combat certain adverse challenges which may attack it. There are those doctors and other health care workers who also feel that calcium is also an effective combatant against certain mental and/or emotional challenges which women may face each month and indeed may possibly serve to eliminate these particular challenges. There are also some doctors and other health care workers who feel that calcium may well play a part in the battle against strokes.
