Coenzyme Q-10 is what is known as a biologically active quinon . It was discovered in 1957 by Professor F. L. Crane and a group of his professional colleagues working at the University of Wisconsin Enzyme Institute. In 1958, its chemical structure was reported by Dr. D. E. Wolfe based on findings from a research team led by Dr. Karl Folkers which had operated out of Merck Laboratories.

Some studies have seemed to indicate that although younger people seem to manufacture a proper amount of coenzyme Q-10 naturally, this ability may decrease as people get older and so older people may require some sort of coenzyme Q-10 supplementation in order to have a sufficient amount of the substance in their bodies.

Medical doctors and other professional health care workers have stated that clinical studies have seemed to indicate that coenzyme Q-10 may help in treating such things as migraine headaches, mitochondrial disorders and various other metabolic disorders. Recent studies have also indicated that coenzyme Q-10 may prove to be an effective combatant against such diseases related to loss of proper brain function.

Clinical studies on rats have shown the oral supplements of coenzyme Q-10, which were introduced into the diets the rats increased the muscle levels and brain levels of coenzyme Q-10 but showed no difference when introduced into the diets of younger rats.

Some medical doctors and other professional health care experts have indicated that ongoing clinical studies are showing increased evidence that coenzyme Q-10 does indeed show a positive beneficial result when used in for maintaining healthy brain function.

Clinical studies made on rats have also shown that with older rats, coenzyme Q-10 introduced into the diet has made a significant difference in regenerating the heart tissues and some medical doctors and other professional health care experts have indicated that they expect these same results to prove true when conducted upon human beings.

Coenzyme Q-10 is already being used in a number of countries other than the United States as a combative treatment against heart disease, strokes, age related macular degeneration and high blood pressure. Medical doctors and other professional health care experts in those countries have reported that they feel that it has shown a significant positive effect. It has also been used to rejuvenate skin in older people and as a combatant in the treatment of acne.

Some amount of coenzyme Q-10 seems to be present in all of the live foods we eat, however the best sources of it seem to be mackerel, salmon, sardines, peanuts, spinach, dandelion greens, liver and beef.
