Folic acid is a vitamin in of the B family or division. It is water soluble and can be found naturally in a number of different foods. Research done by Dr. Lucy Wills back in the early part of the twentieth century led to the eventual discovery and identification of folic acid. It was Dr. Wills who discovered that a yeast extract added to the diet of a pregnant mother could prevent the anemia which was often present during pregnancy during those years. In the 1930's, folic acid was identified as that ingredient in the yeast extract which was directly responsible for the prevention of the anemia in the pregnant mother.

Clinical studies have shown that folic acid has a direct correlation on the prevention of anemia in human beings. Folic acid is a necessary element in the production of new blood cells and also in the proper maintenance of those blood cells in the human body. It is folic acid which is needed to create normal red blood cells.

Folic acid can be found in such foods as cereals, grains, leafy vegetables such as spinach and turnip greens, and some fruits.

A deficiency in the amount of folic acid in the body may lead to a number of different problems, including some heart reactions and behavioral disorders and reactions. A deficiency in folic acid may occur when something happens in the body to increase the need for folic acid. This can include such things as pregnancy, breastfeeding, alcohol abuse, impaired absorption of nutrients, caused by some sort of digestive disorder, the occurrence of cystic fibrosis, kidney dialysis, liver disease or a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin.

Doctors and other professional health care experts have determined that folic acid is especially important in the diet of pregnant mothers, especially during the early months of the pregnancy. A proper amount of folic acid in the diet of the pregnant mother can help to prevent the unborn child from acquiring certain congenital malformation disabilities, such as spinal bifida, in which there are one or more incomplete closures in the spinal column or anencephaly in which the child is born with large portions of the brain missing and often with portions of the skull or scalp missing as well.

It is especially important for older adults to be aware that there is a direct correlation between folic acid and vitamin B12. Consulting with a doctor or a professional medical health care provider before deliberately increasing ones intake of folic acid is a good idea, especially for those persons fifty years of age or over, since they are the people most apt to have a vitamin B12 deficiency and in increase in the intake of folic acid may hide the symptoms of this potentially life threatening disorder.

Many doctors and professional health care experts use folic acid as a combatant in the treatment of a number of diseases.
