Lipoic acid is an antioxidant, that is a substance that is a substance that prohibits oxidation or reactions caused by oxygen or peroxides. It was first discovered by scientists in 1937, when it was found to exist in certain forms of bacteria. Medical doctors and other professional health care experts have done extensive research on it and the usefulness of lipoic acid as an antioxidant has been recognized since 1939. In 1957, scientists discovered that lipoic acid also exists in yeast extracts.
Lipoic acid has been found to exist in such foods as red meats, spinach, dandelion greens, broccoli, potatoes, yams, carrots, beets and yeast.
Lipoic acid is important in the function of metabolism, that is, according to Webster, "the chemical changes in living cells by which energy is provided for vital processes and activities and new material is assimilated". Medical doctors and other professional health care experts claim that recent studies have shown that lipic acid is beneficial in the treatment of the neuropathy which often results from diabetes. Clinical studies show that there are some indications that lipoic acid may also lower blood sugar levels. Some feel that it also is helpful in combating the unpleasant side effects which so often accompany radiation treatments and chemotherapy treatments
Although there is a great deal of controversy concerning the truth of these claims, there are some medical doctors and professional health care experts who feel that lipoic acid can be an important combatant of such diseases and medical disorders as certain kinds of heart conditions, cancers, diabetes, liver disorders, cataracts and may also inhibit the growth of plaque in the arteries. Claims also have been made that lipoic acid has been shown to slow down the aging process. Some medical doctors and other professional health care experts feel that it may inhibit the growth of those genes that seem to trigger the tumor.
Claims have also been made that lipoic acid, because it has been shown to by pass what have been termed blood brain barriers, can be used to remove the mercury that attaches itself to brain cells and very affectively is a prohibiter in the fight against autism.
Conventional medicine does not agree that of a link between mercury poisoning and autism, but there are still those who make that claim and research is still be actively done in all of these controversial areas.
Some medical doctors and other professional health care experts have reported that their clinical studies indicate that lipoic acid may interfere with radiation treatments and chemotherapy treatments, thus rendering these treatments less beneficial than they might otherwise have been.
