Pantothenic acid is also known as vitamin B5. It is an antioxidant, water soluble vitamin which the human body requires in order to be able to break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The existence of pantothenic acid was discovered in 1933 by Dr. R. J. Williams and it was shortly after that time that it was proven conclusively to be a true vitamin. Because of the fact that pantothenic acid was found to be widely distributed all throughout the human body, the Greek word "pantho" which means everywhere was chosen to be incorporated into the name which was given to it.
Doctors and other professional health care experts who deal in naturopathic medicine, that is in the practice of using natural remedies to treat abnormal conditions in the human body, use pantothetic acid in place of the often used medication cortisone. Pantothenic acid is also seen widely as a major ingredient which is used often in the manufacturing of cosmetics. It has been proven to have a positive and important role in maintaining and /or obtaining healthy hair and nails.
In 1997, Dr. Lit-Hung Leung conducted a careful clinical study with one hundred volunteers, forty-five women and fifty-five men, which proved that a deficiency in pantothenic acid in the human body had a direct correlation to the presence of some skin irritations caused by oily skin on that body. By the use of pantothenic acid to combat the oil in the body, Dr. Lit-Hung Leung was able to bring about a marked decrease in the presence of skin irritations caused by oily skin amongst his one hundred volunteers.
This careful study has also been said to prove that treating skin irritations caused by oily skin with pantothenic acid has produced other problems, such as a slowing down of the healing of cuts, significant hair loss and some doctors and other professional health care experts feel that the study showed that it well may provide certain dangers to the human liver.
Foods and food products which have been proven to be good sources of pantothenic acid are cheese, corn, royal jelly, eggs, liver, beef, kidney, sunflower seeds, peas, peanuts, soybeans, brewer's yeast, corn, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, whole grain breads, lobster, split peas, kale, broccoli, tomatoes, avocados, legumes, duck, turkey, lentils, whole grain cereals, legumes and wheat germ.
Some doctors and professional health care experts feel that pantothenic acid is useful in the treatment of some certain human stress problems. Some doctors and professional health care experts feel that it has been proven to be useful to help in maintaining and/or obtaining healthy skin as well as youthful looking skin.
