Phosphorus is a multivalent nonmetal member of the nitrogen group. It is found in inorganic phosphate rocks and in all living cells. Phosphorus has what is called a high level of reactivity, therefore it is never found as a free element in nature. Phosphorus is widely used in the making of fertilizers, detergents, fireworks, friction matches, explosives, pesticides and surprisingly enough, toothpastes. Many people would not immediately think of it as being so, but phosphorus is absolutely essential for the existence of all living elements.

The name phosphorus comes from two words from the Greek language, phos, meaning light and photos meaning bearer, therefore, the name phosphorus literally means light bearer and refers to the fact that phosphorus gives off a faint glow when exposed to oxygen. Phosphorus was first discovered in 1669 by a German scientist by the name of Henning Brand. While working in his laboratory in Hamburg , Germany , Doctor Brand accidentally discovered the existence of phosphorus. He was trying to separate the substances in salt through the process of evaporating urine and suddenly found himself with a here to unknown product in his possession. It was a white material which glowed in the dark and which burned brilliantly. It was Doctor Brand who gave it the name phosphorus, meaning light bearer.

Phosphorus plays an important role in every living organism. It is essential for both DNA and RNA. Living cells use phosphorus in the transporting of cellular energy and it is one of the main components in the structure of cellular membranes.

Food and food substances which contain phosphorus are a number of alcoholic beverages, apples and products produced from apples, apricots, artichokes, asparagus, avocados, bagels, bamboo shoots, bananas, barley, a number of different varieties of beans, beef, beets, biscuits, blackberries, blueberries, a number of different breads, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, butter, cabbage, some kinds of cakes, a large variety of candies, carambola, a number of carbonated beverages, carob flour, carrots, cauliflower. celery, a large variety of cereals, cheeses, chicken, chocolate, coffee, collards, cookies, corn, crustaceans, cucumbers, dandelion greens, donuts, duck, eggs, eggplant, endive, onions, potatoes, a number of fish, lamb, leeks, lettuce, melons, nuts, onions, oranges, parsley, parsnips, peaches, pears, peanut butter, peas, peppers, pickles, pineapples, plantains, plums, pork, potatoes, pumpkins, raisins, radishes, raspberries, rice, seeds, spinach, strawberries, sweet potatoes, tangerines, tea, and turkey.

Phosphorus deficiency is very rare, and when it is seen in the human body it is usually accompanied by a deficiency in the amount of calcium in the body. A phosphorus deficiency however could lead to weak and brittle bones and to teeth problems. Because phosphorus is so available, if any problem is seen, it is more apt to be too much phosphorus in the body. Studies seem to show that most people get much more phosphorus than is needed.
