Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) was first discover in 1879 when a group of scientists who were studying milk discovered an unexpected substance in a sample of milk which was a yellowish green in color and a bright fluorescent. It wasn't until some fifty years later that scientists were actually able to isolate this substance and it became known as riboflavin (vitamin B2). Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is a water soluble micronutrient which plays a direct and important part in keeping the body supplied with energy through the metabolizing of fats , carbohydrates , and proteins .

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) plays an active part in regulating the thyroid activity of the body and contributing to the prevention of either an overactive thyroid or an under active thyroid. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is also a necessary requirement for the formation of red blood cells, Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is essential for proper respiration, antibody production and aids in the regulation of human growth and human reproduction. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is also a key ingredient necessary in helping us to maintain and/or obtain healthy skin, hair and nails.

Almonds, cheese, leafy green vegetables, liver, mature soybeans, yeast and milk and common sources of riboflavin (vitamin B2.) Since the body does not store riboflavin (vitamin B2) it is essential that we, in order to properly care for our bodies, see to it that we keep a proper flow of these sources coming into our bodies. Other food sources of riboflavin (vitamin B2) are some baby foods, some breakfast cereals, fruit drinks, sauces, processed cheeses, vitamin enriched milk and other foods which it has been used to fortify. Enriched flour is also a good source of riboflavin (vitamin B2). Riboflavin (vitamin B2) can also be found in organ meats, such as liver, kidney and heart.

It is important to remember that riboflavin (vitamin B2) is easily destroyed by light and that foods stored in clear containers are quite apt to lose their supply of riboflavin (vitamin B2) in a very short time period unless they are kept in very dark storage areas. Alkalis such as baking soda will also destroy riboflavin (vitamin B2).

Some doctors and other health care professionals feel that riboflavin (vitamin B2) plays an important part in the prevention of certain visual and eye disorders. Many doctors and other health care professionals also feel that riboflavin (vitamin B2) also contributes directly to the healing of various injuries to the body. Studies have been made also that seem to indicate that riboflavin (vitamin B2) may play a direct and important part in the protection of the nervous system and in treating various conditions of the nervous system and diseases and disorders which are known to attack it.
