Rosemary, or to give it its official Latin name Rosmarinus officinalis, is an herb which is a member of the mint family Lamiaceae . Its leaves are similar to evergreen needles and it can be found with flowers of several different colors, such as purple, blue, white and pink and different variations of these colors. It is a plant which is native to the Mediterranean region.
While we have no exact time frame for the discovery of Rosemary or a record of who first discovered it, we do know that it has been around for some number of years. Shakespeare made a reference to it in his play Hamlet , when he had his character Ophelia refer to it in her speech as being something used for remembrance. The Rosemary blossom is sometimes used even today as something to be worn as a symbol of remembrance, particularly at funerals or at weddings.
Researchers from Rudgers University in New Jersey have said that they feel that their research shows that Rosemary is a substance which is of value when used as a preservative. They were so impressed with what they considered its preservative powers, which they put on a level with such preservatives as BHA and BHT that they took out a paten on a chemical which they were able to derive from Rosemary. Rosemary is also sometimes added to lemonade as an extra flavoring. When used as a cooking additive, Rosemary gives off a smell that is distinctly like that of the mustard plant.
Rosemary is easy to trim into various shapes and because of this attribute, it is often seen used as topiary.
Medical doctors and other professional health care workers have said that their studies indicate that the ingestion of Rosemary into the human body helps the recipients to be more alert, helps them to maintain or to obtain good circulation throughout the body and may be helpful also when it is taken as a tonic or as a tea like drink in helping to avoid headaches. They felt that the studies showed that Rosemary also was useful, when the blossoms were mixed with wine and then distilled, in helping the body to keep limber and rubbed into the body as a lubricating lotion to help to alleviate or to avoid such problems as rheumatism and gout. They felt that the clinical studies also showed that it was helpful when used as a mouth wash and also when used as a disinfectant.
Some studies also have seemed to indicate that Rosemary used as a lotion and messaged vigorously into the hair helps to keep hair follicles healthy and to keep hair. Luxurious looking and full and free from dandruff.
