Seaweed is the name given to the types of brownish or reddish algae found growing on the floor of the world ocean. Seaweed is multicellular and macrothallic , thereby being different from most algae which is microscopic in size. Seaweed is also found with cyanobacteria, which is found in shades of blue and green and is often referred to as seaweed or blue and green algae, even though science has reached the point in today's world where we know that it is not actually an algae
Seaweeds are vastly used as a food substance in a number of diverse places, among them Korea , Scotland , Japan , China , Vietnam , Canada , Peru , Scandinavia , Ireland , the Philippines and Wales .
The food substances made from seaweeds are as diverse as the places where it is used for that purpose. In Wales , for example, the red seaweed which is known as porphyra is used to create the food substance which is called laver bread, in Japan this same substance is dried and used to create sheets which are called nori and which are used in soups and also in wrapping sushi. Alginic acid, which is found primarily in brown seaweed is used in the production of ice cream, milk shakes, various kinds of sauces, beer, and as a substitute for fat in various kinds of processed meats.
Recent studies made by research experts in the field of food science and nutrition, have been said to show that adding alginic acid to certain forms of what we term junk food would increase the fiber content of certain kinds of pies, cakes and burgers, rendering them healthier without changing the tastes.
Seaweed is also used in the creation of toothpastes, shoe polishes, shampoos, air fresheners, cosmetic creams and in fire fighting foam as a thickener, which causes the foam to become sticky. Seaweed is also used as a fertilizer.
Seaweed is mentioned as far back as in what is called the Ebers Papyrus, a written record belonging to the ancient Egyptians. According to these early writings, they used seaweed as a substance to treat breast cancer.
In the 1960's, many medical doctors and other professional healthcare experts stated that they felt that seaweed had certain properties which could help the human body to remain or to become tumor free. Some medical doctors and other professional healthcare experts further stated that they felt that clinical studies indicated that the ingestion of seaweed helped the human body to obtain or to retain a healthy immune system.
It is important to note that some seaweed contains high amounts of iodine and many medical doctors and other professional health care workers feel that the intake of too much iodine into the human body could cause the body to have serious health related problems.
