What Is Vitamin B2.

Vitamin B2 is one of the eight water-soluble vitamins that are essential to maintaining a healthy body. Combined, these 8 vitamins are often referred to as B complex vitamins and specifically vitamin B2 is called Riboflavin. Vitamin B2 has a number of positive effects on the human body and each of them are important to your continued health so it is vital that you receive a good level in your diet. If you are not receiving an appropriate amount in the food you eat or what you drink then you should take vitamin B2 supplements.

What Does B2 Do?

Both B1 and B2 are directly responsible for creating sugar from carbohydrates. This sugar is then used to create energy. Without vitamin B2 it is very difficult for our bodies to complete this process and when we are lacking in energy it causes many other detrimental health effects. B2 along with the seven other B complex vitamins also break down proteins and fat and they maintain muscles and ensure that the required muscles grow. B2 alone acts as a highly efficient antioxidant destroying free radicals within the body. As you can see, vitamin B2 is directly and partially responsible for a number of different functions.

A Lack Of Riboflavin.

A serious problem arises when people do not have a high enough intake of vitamin B2 but it is actually found in very few food items so it is not uncommon for a deficiency to be the main reason that people suffer. It is particularly common for elderly people to suffer from a deficiency in vitamin B2; if this is the case it is important that you do something to combat this as soon as possible. Probably the most effective way is to take B complex supplements although it is possible to get specific B2 supplements that are soluble in water or are in a tablet form.

Using B2 as a preventative Measure.

Vitamin B2 supplements can be used as a preventative medicine for certain conditions as well. B2 is proven to help protect eyes and prevent damage to them. In particular, cataracts can be prevented through supplemental vitamin B2. It is important to remember that, as with all supplements, it is possible to take too much B2 supplement. More than 10mg per day can actually have the opposite effect and cause damage to the retina because it becomes more sensitive and less protected from the sunlight.

Beating Migraines.

Riboflavin supplements can also be used to prevent migraines to some extent although little testing has been done to compare the effect to other migraine and headache tablets. People with eating disorders are more often than not deficient in vitamin B2 and B complex supplements can help the recovery process because they lower stress and anxiety levels.

Dietary Riboflavin.

Riboflavin is most commonly found in eggs, almonds, organ meats, wheat, rice, mushrooms, soy, broccoli and brussel sprouts. Remember that the light easily destroys B2 so it is important that you should store B2 supplements or food items out of the way of direct sunlight to ensure the potency of the B2. It takes very large doses of B2 to cause anything that would be considered a side effect, however, side effects are possible as are interactions with other drugs. If possible talk to a physician to find out whether you are safe to take B2 supplements before you start a course of them.
