Ribose, also called d-ribose, is classified as a carbohydrate. It was discovered in 1909 by Phoebus Levene. The roles of Ribose in the body were studied in the 1930's, however the important role of it in energy production was not discovered until the 1970's.
Ribose is an important component for our bodies energy production and is required for synthesis nucleotides which are the basic building blocks of DNA and RNA as well as ATP and glycogen.
Ribose begins the metabolic process for production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP's main purpose is to transport chemical energy within cells for metabolism[1].
Ribose regulates the body's ability to create nucleotide carriers. These carriers are components of energy production. Hence, if ribose is only available in limited amounts our body's ability to produce energy will also be impared.
Ribose has also been shown support increase muscular energy, promote restful sleep, mental clarity, boost endurance, and promote recovery[2]. Ribose is a effective way to improve our body's energy levels whether it be for strenuous physical exercise or just the daily needs of everyday life.
Research on Ribose has also shown that it enhances energy recovery in damaged heart muscle after restricted blood flow[3]. These studies have also demonstrated that ribose supplementation improves heart function and reduces fatigue[4].
Other research supports the ability of it to promote recovery in conditions characterized by ATP depletion.
No known adverse reactions have been found when consuming less then 10 grams per day.
Ribose is a very popular supplement for those who wish to increase stamina and endurance. It is also used by people for workout recovery.
